Bambusee has teamed up with Sahawood to produce a range of fashionable wooden sunglasses at its workshops in East Java, Indonesia. All of the sunglasses are handmade and use wood that is sustainably sourced, recycled or reclaimed from demolished buildings. Sahawood is the brainchild of Theo Zaenuri of the Sadar Hati charity. This charity supports in the rehabilitation of people with drug addictions and assists them in their return to a normal life. Together with Bambusee, Sadar Hati also provides employment opportunities for ex-convicts who learned woodworking skills while serving their sentence. Sadar Hati also implements harm reduction programs to minimize the spread of HIV/ AIDS.
Sahawood sunglasses come in a traditional Indonesian batik pouch, hand stitched and naturally dyed. This is packaged in a recycled cardboard box for delivery.
All Sahawood sunglasses are fitted with high quality spring-loaded hinges and non-polarised CE certified lenses fully conforming to both EN ISO 12311:2013 and ISO 12312-1:2013 standards.
